The Spokane escort who was shot dead last week by a man who said he wanted to kill her has a history of being arrested, and she’s had a reputation for being a danger to the community.
But the killing of 21-year-old Katie Dillard last week has prompted some to question the escort’s ability to protect her clients and the public.
The escort, Baton Rouge, was shot while she was in a car with three men.
A suspect has been arrested.
The escort was in the process of escorting a group of people to a party, but the escort was killed by a gunshot wound to the leg, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press.
Police said the man who shot the escort fired several shots into the car, but they couldn’t determine if he hit her.
The man, later identified as James Thomas, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-time murder.
A judge later ordered him held without bail.
“She was going to take care of her clients, she was going out there to take them to a good place,” Dillard’s mother, Kathy, said Thursday.
“She was not going to be a danger for anybody.”
The escort is the mother of two girls.
Kathy said her daughter has had issues with her father and was once accused of stealing a pair of shoes.
“I was really hoping that she was not in any danger,” Kathy Dillard said.
The woman’s mother said she and her family were told the escort had been involved in a domestic violence case before.
The woman was fired from the escort, Kathy said, and told she would have to get help.
She said she never got any of that help, and when she called the escort she got no response.
“If I hadn’t been able to call her she wouldn’t have been there,” Kathy said.
“I had no idea.
I was devastated.”
A video shows the escort getting out of her car, looking at the sidewalk, and then disappearing.
The video was taken by a bystander.
It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
The shooting comes as Spokane and other cities have grappled with the high rate of violence against women.
The City Council voted Wednesday to pass a measure banning escorts from driving.
The measure also will ban anyone with a concealed carry permit from driving a car.
“This was a woman, who had just walked up to a car and pulled out a gun,” Spokane Police Chief Mike O’Neil said Thursday, adding that the escort is being treated as a person of interest.
O’Neil added that the police are also looking into the escort and her background.
