The idea that escort services would have a business model based on race is a bit strange.
It’s not exactly new.
But in the world of escort services, it’s become a big deal.
Black escorts were used to sell women to men who were not their clients in the past, and now that trend is changing.
The black escort industry is thriving.
And if you’re black, you’re going to want to keep your services, and the people you’re offering them, black, to a minimum.
“If you want to be a black escort, and you don’t want to play the game, then stop,” said Jennifer McAlister, a spokesperson for the Houston Escort Alliance, a non-profit that represents the industry.
“Because we can’t take this.
There’s a reason why it’s not a black industry.”
McAlister is not a stranger to the debate about escort services.
She was once a full-time escort, which meant she had to go through a whole slew of hoops before being able to work with a black client.
Her last full-service escorting job was in 2009, but McAlisters said she was surprised to see so many black escorts getting hired in the industry today.
McALISTER: The reality is that these people are just people who can’t find a good job in this industry.
I mean, you have to go to a job fair, get a license, get certification, and that’s it.
It takes you all the way to a black person’s dream job, so I think that’s the reason.
So what do you do, go and start a business?
McAliders experience is a good example of the industry’s growing pains.
When McAllers first started her business, her husband was an escort and they worked out of a garage in the middle of a city.
“We had to get to a place where we were making enough money to pay for rent and food,” she said.
“But at the same time, it took a toll on us emotionally, and I was really struggling with the way I was being treated.”
McAlists husband eventually left the industry, but she still has no regrets about what she did.
“I just knew that I had to be an escort.
And I did,” she explained.
“The reality is, it was so hard.”
She said that for a time, she worked as a prostitute for $3 an hour.
But McAlist did not have a problem with the industry she was in, and she eventually moved on to a full time job working as an escort in Los Angeles.
So, when she first heard about the Black Escort Association, McAlsons husband was working in a black-only escort service, and her new experience in escorting came as a shock.
McAlstings husband had not asked for a black escorting business license, and McAlsts husband said that they would never have asked for one.
“It was such a shock to me because I’m from a country where I grew up and I had a mother and father who were escorts,” McAlsters husband said.
“And my husband said to me, ‘Well, how do you feel about it?’
And I said, ‘I just want to work for free, because I can’t afford a license.'”
When the Black and White Alliance started, Mc Alsists husband said he had never heard of a black or white escort service.
“My wife and I were really concerned,” Mc Alsteris husband said, “and we wanted to do something about it.”
The Black Escorting Alliance eventually went into the business to change that.
According to the association, there are more than 6,500 black escort services in the United States.
They do not discriminate against black people.
But McAlsteris family’s experience has been a hard one.
“[We] were just really scared to death, and it just took me a while to understand that we’re not just an escort service anymore,” Mc Aslister said.
McAslister has been using escorts for the last three years, but her husband says that the service has been too difficult for them to accept.
Mc Aslines husband said it’s been tough for him to accept Mc Aslanis new experience.
My husband and I have to admit that it’s really tough for us to accept that we’ve just been hired to be escorts.
It has been so hard for me to accept it, and he said, it has been harder than anything we could’ve ever imagined.
Mc Alister said that the Black escorting service industry needs to be more welcoming and accepting of the fact that black people can work as escorts without needing to be hired.
I want people to know that we are not going to be exploited.
